Earth, water, fire, air, wood, metal, void, aether, sulphur, mercury, salt — every major civilization built a small set of primitives to explain matter, change, energy and life. Wu Xing is most often translated as "five elements", but every classical Chinese commentator would correct you. The five are not substances: they are stages of an ongoing transformation. Wood is the phase of expansion, fire of peak activity, earth of centring, metal of contraction, water of return. The system encodes change first, matter second."五行"常被译为"五元素",但古代中文注疏皆会更正你:五行并非物质,而是不断转化中的五个阶段。木是伸展之相、火是极动之相、土是居中之相、金是收敛之相、水是归元之相。该体系先编码变化,再附及物质。

Wood burns into fire; fire's ash builds earth; earth solidifies into metal; cool metal condenses water; water nourishes wood. Each phase produces the next — a closed productive cycle that has no beginning and no end.

Zou Yan (~3rd c. BCE) read history itself as a wu-xing cycle: each dynasty inherits the conquering phase of the previous one. The Han claimed earth, the Tang fire, the Yuan metal. A philosophy of history written in five colours.

Feng shui as five-phase ecology风水即五行生态

A site's water flow, vegetation (wood), exposure (fire), soil (earth) and rock (metal) are read together. The dwelling is sited so the five phases generate one another rather than overcome each other. An elemental ecology, centuries before the word existed.

Ground, terrain, and the five地、形与五

Sun Bin and the Mawangdui silk texts assign each terrain to a phase: marsh = water, plain = earth, forest = wood, mountain = metal. A general who attacks a "metal" army from a "fire" position has the cycle in his favour. Logistics dressed in cosmology.

Substance and quality物质与性质

The pre-Socratics each picked one principle: Thales said water, Anaximenes air, Heraclitus fire, Xenophanes earth. Empedocles (~450 BCE) was the synthesiser who made it four. Aristotle then paired them by qualities and added a fifth — aether — for the perfect heavens.前苏格拉底诸贤各举一本原:泰勒斯举水、阿那克西米尼举气、赫拉克利特举火、色诺芬尼举土。约公元前 450 年,恩培多克勒为之综合,定为四。亚里士多德再以性质成对,并为完美的天界增第五——以太。

Heaviest, falls to centre. Body, bone, stability. In Aristotle's universe, this is where the ground is — and where heavy objects belong by nature.

Heavy but flowing. Blood, phlegm, lymph. Below air, above earth. The great equaliser — water levels itself.

Light, rises. Breath, soul (psychē was originally a wind-word), atmosphere. The realm of birds, weather, life-giving exhalation.

Lightest, rises highest. Light, heat, life-warmth. The phase Heraclitus took to be fundamental: panta rhei, all flows.

aether · αἰθήρ — Aristotle's fifth

Aether — incorruptible heavens以太 —— 不腐之天

Aristotle gave the celestial spheres a substance the four sublunar elements lacked: weightless, eternal, moving in perfect circles. The starry sky was made of different physics. This was overthrown only when Newton showed that the apple and the moon obey the same law of gravitation.

亚里士多德为诸天球赋予四元素所无之物质:无重、永恒、行完美之圆。星空由不同的物理学构成。直至牛顿证明苹果与月亮服从同一引力定律,此说方倾。

Density and dissolution密度与消解

Godai borrows from the Indian Pañcabhūta but stacks the elements as a sequence of decreasing density: solid → liquid → energy → motion → emptiness. The fifth, kū (void), is not a substance — it is the open ground in which the others arise. Refracted through Shingon and Tendai esoteric Buddhism into stūpa architecture and into the structure of Musashi's Book of Five Rings.五大借自印度五大种,但将元素依密度递减堆叠:固→液→能→动→空。第五,空(kū),并非物质——而是其余诸大得以涌现的开放底基。经真言、天台之密宗折射,化入塔形建筑与宫本武藏《五輪書》之结构。

Earth — what stays put地 —— 不动者

Solid, stable, resistant. In Musashi's chapter, the Ground is the foundation: study, posture, basic stance. You cannot fight without it.

sui 水

Water — what adapts水 —— 适应者

Takes the shape of its container. The water chapter is technique — a flexible body that responds to the opponent rather than fixing on a plan.

随器而形。水之卷为技——柔身应敌,而非固守一谋。

ka 火

Fire — what transforms火 —— 转化者

Energy, decision, kill. The fire chapter is engagement — initiative, breaking the enemy's rhythm, the moment of conversion.

能、决、杀。火之卷为接战——主动、破其节奏、转化之刻。

fū 風

Wind — what sees風 —— 观察者

Movement that has no body. The wind chapter is comparative study of other schools — knowing how others fight by feeling their movement, like wind detecting obstacles.

无身之动。風之卷比较他流——以风觉障之法,体察他人之战。

kū 空 — void

Void — what allows空 —— 允容者

Not nothingness, but the open ground in which the four others occur. Musashi's void chapter is famously short. To act from kū is to act without preconception, without script, without form. Modern strategy keeps re-discovering this — under names like "OODA loop," "complex-adaptive strategy," "agile". The Japanese had a one-character word.

非虚无,而是其余四大涌现之开放底基。武藏空之卷以短著称。从空而动,即无成见、无脚本、无形而动。现代战略不断重新发现之——名曰 OODA、复杂适应战略、敏捷。日本人用一个字。

05 · Pañcabhūta — Indian five great elements05 · 五大种 —— 印度

The Vedic and later Sāṃkhya systems pair each element with a sense and a sense-quality (tanmātra): earth with smell, water with taste, fire with sight, air with touch, ether with sound. Cosmogony recapitulates perception. The system underwrites Ayurveda, yoga, and most of the body-work traditions of South Asia.吠陀及后来的数论将每一元素与一感官、一感性(唯量 tanmātra)配对:地与嗅、水与味、火与视、风与触、空与声。宇宙生成重演感知。该体系是阿育吠陀、瑜伽以及南亚多数身体修炼传统的底层。

Heaviest, structures the body's frame. Bones, teeth, nails. Smell is the sense that grounds you in your environment.

Liquidity, fluids, plasma. The element that lets parts hold together. Taste, the chemical sense, is its perceptual counterpart.

Transformation转化

Digestive fire (agni), metabolic heat, intellectual brilliance. Sight is light is fire — the only sense that operates at distance through energy.

vāyu · air · touch

Movement运动

Breath, prāṇa, nervous activity. The element of communication — between organs, between thoughts. Touch detects motion against the skin.

ākāśa · ether · sound

Space — and where consciousness lives空——意识之所

Ākāśa is the precondition for the others: a region in which they can be. Sound, the most subtle sense, is its register. Vedānta and most schools of Buddhism eventually identify ākāśa with consciousness itself, and elevate it above all the rest. Modern physics keeps something of this when it speaks of vacuum, fields, and spacetime as the substrate from which particles emerge.

The cosmos as battlefield宇宙即战场

Iranian cosmology stands apart: each element is sacred, and impurity is moral as much as physical. The cosmos is a battlefield between the truth (Asha) of Ahura Mazdā and the lie (Druj) of Angra Mainyu. Fire is the visible aspect of the wise lord — every fire-temple keeps a single eternal flame.伊朗宇宙论独树一帜:每一元素皆神圣,污秽既是物理的也是道德的。宇宙是阿胡拉·马兹达的真理(Asha)与安格拉·曼纽的谎言(Druj)之间的战场。圣火是智主的可见面相——每一座火庙皆守一支永燃之火。

Fire is not a symbol of Ahura Mazdā — it is his presence. Polluting fire (e.g. by burning impure substances) is a serious offence. Three grades of sacred fire are kept at three grades of temple.

Rivers and springs are sacred. To bathe an unwashed body in flowing water is a sin. The hydraulic ethic of Iran — qanats, abundant baths — has Zoroastrian roots.

No burial of the dead不可土葬

A corpse is the supreme pollutant; burying it would defile the earth. The Towers of Silence (dakhma) instead expose the body to vultures, dissolving it without contaminating any element.

尸首为至污;土葬即玷地。寂没之塔(dakhma)反置尸体于秃鹫之啄,得以分解而不染任一元素。

The breath of the world世界之息

Wind has a dual nature in the Avesta — there is a benevolent and a malevolent wind. Air is what lets the soul travel after death across the Chinvat bridge.

Light, darkness, and the seven holy光、暗、与七圣

Above the elements stand the Amesha Spentas — seven attributes of the wise lord, each presiding over an element or ethical principle. The dualism of light and darkness, good and evil, became Zoroastrianism's most exported idea — into Manichaeism, into Jewish apocalyptic, into Christian eschatology, into Islamic angelology.

Was ancient cosmology just superstition?古宇宙论只是迷信吗?
No, it was the best available science. The same minds that wrote the I Ching also engineered the gnomon, observed solstices, and tracked Jupiter's twelve-year cycle. The same Greeks who named the four elements measured the Earth's circumference. The cosmologies failed at chemistry but succeeded at giving humans a framework to organise their own observations. Why did most civilizations land on a small number of elements?为何多数文明都落在少量元素上?
Cognitive ergonomics. Working memory holds about four items at once. A system with two elements is too crude (hot/cold, light/dark); a system with twelve is too detailed to manipulate without writing. Four to seven elements lands in the human-friendly zone. They are answering different questions. Greek elements answer what is matter made of? — they are nouns. Wu Xing answers how does change happen? — they are verbs. The Greek system maps onto the periodic table; the Chinese system maps onto thermodynamic cycles, ecological succession, and political legitimacy. Which one is "right" depends on what you want to explain. 它们回答不同的问题。希腊元素回答物质由何构成?——是名词。五行回答变化如何发生?——是动词。希腊系统映射至周期表;中国系统映射至热力学循环、生态演替、政治合法性。何者"对",取决于你想解释什么。

Three layers. (1) The vocabulary — words like spirit, quintessence, volatile, distil, fix are alchemical, and they still structure how we think about chemistry, psychology, and finance. (2) The medical traditions — TCM, Ayurveda, Tibetan medicine — are still used by 2 billion people. Should we take any of this seriously today?今日是否应认真对待此等学说?
Take the patterns, not the metaphysics. The patterns — that systems oscillate between phases, that bodies are ecosystems, that there is some prima materia from which complex structure emerges — keep being rediscovered by modern science. The metaphysics — that fire literally rises because it is sublunar, or that mercury can be transmuted to gold — does not survive.
