Godai borrows from the Indian Pañcabhūta but stacks the elements as a sequence of decreasing density: solid → liquid → energy → motion → emptiness. The fifth, kū (void), is not a substance — it is the open ground in which the others arise. The Vedic and later Sāṃkhya systems pair each element with a sense and a sense-quality (tanmātra): earth with smell, water with taste, fire with sight, air with touch, ether with sound. Cosmogony recapitulates perception.
